Michael Phelps Suspended for DUI
USA Swimming has suspended Olympic champion Michael Phelps for six months for his second DUI arrest.
Banned for DUI
The 29-year-old swimmer has been banned from participating in USA Swimming-sanctioned meets through April 6, 2015, thus forcing him to withdraw from next year’s world championships. According to USA Swimming, Phelps was in violation of its Code of Conduct. The organization cited a section of its 2014 Rule Book for his punishment. The approved sanctions will take effect immediately. “Michael’s conduct was serious and required significant consequences,” said USA Swimming executive director, Chuck Wielgus. “We endorse and are here to fully support his personal development actions.”
Phelps Accepts Sanctions
According to the swimmer’s representatives, Phelps has accepted USA Swimming’s sanctions. He has apologized for his actions and, as he shared yesterday, is taking steps to address them.” He is also entering a six-week, in-patient program following his arrest and charge. In a series of tweets, Phelps posted, “Swimming is a major part of my life, but right now I need to focus my attention on me as an individual, and do the necessary work to learn from this experience and make better decisions in the future.”
The DUI Arrest
Phelps was arrested and charged on Sept. 30 with driving under the influence. He registered .14 percent on a blood-alcohol test. The legal limit in Maryland, where he was arrested, is .08. He was also charged with excessive speed and crossing double lane lines. His trial is scheduled for Nov. 19. If Phelps is convicted, he faces up to one year in jail, a $1,000 fine as well as the lost of his driver’s license for 6 months.
